WAGENER - Mr. Charlie Eugene “Gene” Tyler, Jr., 81, entered into rest Thursday, March 22, 2007.
Mr. Tyler is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Lybrand Tyler, daughter and son-in-law LeMyra and GarryYoung of Wagener and son and daughter-in-law Charlie E. and Ann Tyler, III of Wagener, grandsons Tyler Alan Young, Charlie E. “Chet” Tyler, IV, and R. Todd Tyler, and a brother Marion D. “Shorty” and Charlotte Tyler.
Mr. Tyler was born in Wagener, the son of the late Charlie Eugene and Myra Corrinne Dukes Tyler. Mr. Gene was a third generation merchant in Wagener for 55 years. He was well known for his produce…traveling every week to The Farmers Market in Columbia to handpick the best quality available. He was a member of the South Carolina Retailer’s Association. Mr. Gene employed many young people in his businesses and strived to instill in each one the importance of getting the job done and getting it done right. He also served as Wagener Fire Chief for fifteen years. He became a licensed pilot at the age of 67 and enjoyed whatever time he could get away from his businesses flying his own airplane. In his younger years Mr. Gene was an avid outdoorsman. In his latter years he enjoyed feeding and watching God’s creatures. He loved the Lord and served him well. He was a licensed Methodist minister. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday school teacher, and in other capacities at Wagener United Methodist Church. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend. Our Big Daddy will be missed.
Visitation will be Friday, March 23rd from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Wagener Chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home, 163 Main St. South, Wagener, S.C. (803) 564-5333. The Funeral Service will be Saturday, March 24th at 11:00 a.m. in the Wagener United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kristen Richardson-Frick officiating. Mr. Tyler will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service for viewing. Burial will follow in Tyler Cemetery. Pallbearers will be C.E. “Charlie” Tyler, III, Garry Young, Tyler A.Young, C.E. “Chet” Tyler, IV, R. Todd Tyler, and Danny Hartley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Wagener United Methodist Church Building Fund at P. O. Box 265, Wagener, SC 29164.
