Wagener – Allison Hood “Al” Tyler, Sr., 88, entered into rest Sunday, March 13, 2016.

Born March 26, 1927, he was the son of John William and Carmen Hood Tyler.  Services celebrating the life of Mr. Tyler will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2016, 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Wagener.  The family will receive friends following the service.

Mr. Tyler was second generation owner of Tyler Brothers in Wagener.  After World War II, Mr. Tyler’s father John Tyler, the last surviving member of the original Tyler Brothers brought his sons Lowman and Al into the family business.  Mr. Al was over the men’s wear department of the store until his retirement.  He attended buyer’s shows in Charlotte and other cities in the southeast. Prior to his retirement, he served as President of the Virginia and Carolina’s Men’s Clothiers Association.  He graduated from Wagener High School and attended Clemson University and the University of South Carolina.  He also was a graduate of New York College of Retail.

Mr. Tyler served in the United States Navy in communication (encoding and decoding) and published the base newspaper when stationed in the Azores. Mr. Al was a member of First Baptist Wagener and supported the church in all endeavors. He served on many church committees and was secretary treasurer of Men’s I Sunday School class for many years. Mr. Al was a very generous man, yet never sought recognition.

Mr. Tyler was the essence of a southern gentleman. He was always dressed to suit the occasion, adhered to all rules of etiquette, and conduct. Mr. Al was an enthusiastic golfer and played several times a week. He was a member of four senior golf associations and played at least once a month in each of them. He received numerous trophies and awards during his time on the golf course.

Mr. Tyler was predeceased by his wife of 61 years Kay Salley Tyler, his parents and his brothers Lowman and John, and cousins M.D. “Shorty” Tyler and Gene “Fat” Tyler. He is survived by his sons Allison H. (Rhonda) Tyler, Jr. and John William (Vicky) Tyler, his grandchildren Carmen Tyler (Joshua) Bazis, Wesley Tyler, Christi Tyler (Lee) Romines, Victoria Nicole Tyler, and Morgan Tyler (Ben) Willard, and great grandchildren Serena, Trey, and Tyler Romines, Natalie Black, and Quinn Bazis.
