Pelion – Mr. Clyde J. Spires, 91, entered into rest Saturday, July 19, 2014.
Mr. Spires is survived by his wife of 68 years Mary Catherine Jacobs Spires, daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn S. Bocock and John, grandchildren Jeri and Joe Jeffcoat, Johnny B. and Sasha Bocock and Jane and Jerry McGill, great grandchildren James B. Bocock, Jacob McGill and Joseph McGill, and sister and brother-in-law Betty and L. C. Wingard.
Mr. Spires was born in Lexington County the son of the late Granville and Thelma Chaney Spires. He was also preceded in death by his brothers; Palmon Spires, Delmedge Spires, T. L Spires and Billy Spires.
Mr. Spires was a World War II veteran of General Patton’s 3rd Army having fought in North Africa, South Africa, Anzio Beach, Italy, Siegfried Line, Dead Horse Valley and Colmar Pocket. He landed at Normandy under General Eisenhower. Mr. Spires received a silver star and a bronze star among other medals.
He was a member of Elmore 288 Masonic Lodge and a charter member of Chapter 225 Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Spires was member of King Grove Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and cemetery committee member for many years. He loved deer hunting and was still president of the Clyde Spires Hunting Club.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Blizzard Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 4:00 pm Tuesday in the King Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ellis “Cook” Addy officiating. Mr. Spires will be placed in the church at 3:00 pm for viewing. Burial will follow in the Oaklawn cemetery in Pelion with military honors as well as Masonic and Eastern Star Rites. Active Pallbearers will be members of the Clyde Spires Hunting Club. Honorary pallbearers will be Masonic and Eastern Star members.
