Myrtle Ruth Huggins Lucas
September 12, 1924 - September 4, 2014
Born in West Columbia, Myrtle Ruth Huggins Lucas was the daughter of Sidney Arthur and Mary Gertrude Laird Huggins. She married Dewey Jefferson Lucas, July 4, 1942 and became an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where she brought her children to be baptized: Linda (Don) Burdett; Eugene (Dianne); Carolyn (Tony) Davis; and William (Cathy). She is survived by one sister, Marlene Huggins, and will join in eternal life siblings: Ethel, Woodrow, Dutha, Mildred, Delano and Larry, as well as grandson Stuart Davis and great-granddaughter Katie Lucas. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Lottie Gregg and Elizabeth Hare.
She was known as “Mom” to her children; “Granny Myrtle” to Jeff Lucas; “Grandmama” to Andrea Kansas, Julie and Shane Lucas; and “GG” to Jordan and Madison Bookhart, Dawson and Sommer Lucas, and Taylor Kansas. She was known to her church community as someone who could be counted on to keep up the church environment, within and without -- her love of gardening was evident in the church yard as well as the altar which frequently was graced with flowers from her own garden.
Her ability to produce nearly perfect embroidery stitches led to her many years spent weaving yarn onto looms at Pacific Mills and later department head of the fabric and craft department at the first Walmart to open in the area. She enjoyed sharing her interests in crafts with like-minded customers. Myrtle modeled herself after her father’s desire for education for his family, emphasizing such to her children. She was the ever-willing babysitter for her children and grandchildren to pursue their education goals.
The family wishes to thank Morningside of Lexington and especially Sandra Maynor, Rhonda Smith and Amedisys Hospice for the care given to their mother. Pallbearers are: Julie Lucas; Jeff, Jimmy and Shane Lucas; and Ronnie and Shannon Walker. Interment will be in Pelion Oaklawn Cemetary. Visitation will follow at Holy Trinity Parish Center.
