Wagener - Mr. James Morris “Workhorse” Hughes, 80, entered into rest Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009.

Mr. Hughes was the husband of Ruth Brazell Hughes for 58 years. Their children are: the late Randy Hughes, Mitchell Hughes of Leesville, Renee’ DiMauro, and Mark Hughes of Wagener; 7 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
Mr. Hughes was born in Neeses and was the son of the late Elisha Talton “Bub” and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Harley Hughes.  He was also predeceased by 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Mr. Hughes graduated Neeses High School with honors of best all around in sports and academics. He then joined the U. S. Navy serving aboard the USS Comstock, peace keeping in the South Pacific between WWII and the Korean War.
Mr. Hughes established his home and family in Columbia. He was a musician of several instruments and had a passion for fishing. Mr. Hughes built his own night club, “Hughes” in Wagener now more of a community Center for the younger kids to have a place to go as he so dearly loved them all.

Mr. Hughes retired from the SRS.  He formerly served as the Vice Commander of the V.F.W. Post 6304 in Wagener having so much love for its every member. Mr. Hughes was a member of Wagener United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wagener Chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Wagener United Methodist Church with the Revs. Hope Avins and Johnny Slice officiating.  Pallbearers will be members of V.F.W. Post 6304. Burial will follow at Wagener Cemetery with military honors.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the professionals who cared for him during his lengthy battle with cancer: The S. C. Oncology Associates, Palmetto Health Hospice, and Dr. William Clarke and his staff at the Wagener Medical Center. You all are so highly appreciated!
