Dorothy “Dottie” R. Dement, 92, passed away on Wednesday April 15, 2015 in Aiken, South Carolina.
Born on February 25, 1923, in Dallas Texas. She was the only child to Erma and Guy Reckley.
After graduating from Adamson High School, she went on to attend Draughons School of Business, where she would learn the skills to become an Executive Administrative Assistant, or as she would say, an Executive secretary.
While attending Droughons, she met, Omer C Dement. Dorothy and Omer married on December 30, 1944 in Dallas, Texas and celebrated sixty two years of marriage before his death.
They made their home in Dallas Texas. They welcomed their son, Gary in 1950 and daughter, Marsha, in 1952. As a family, they were members of the congregation at Fitzhugh Ave Church of Christ. They worked with the congregation over the years helping it grow and become LaPrada Drive Church of Christ.
Dottie loved the PTA. She was an active participant while her children attended school and served as President for five years. As an elected Life-Time member, she remained active after her children finished school. Even her grandchildren remember accompanying her to executive PTA meetings through the 1980’s.
Dottie worked various secretarial positions throughout her career, before settling in as the Executive Administrative Assistant to Mr. Langford at Placid Oil Company.
Working in the pre-computer days, she was a master at short hand. She would use it to write notes to herself her entire life. (Ask your grandparents about short hand.)
Dottie also loved music. She loved to sing. She especially loved to play the piano. She owned the same piano for over fifty years. Through this time her children, grandchildren and great children would gather around to sing as she played.
Soon after retirement she and Omer moved to East Texas, where they lived until his death in February of 2007. She then moved to South Carolina, with her daughter Marsha, until her death.
Dottie is preceded in death by her parents, Erma and Guy Reckley. Her husband, Omer C. Dement. Granddaughter, Katie Marie Dement.
She is survived by her son, Gary and his wife, Genell, of Mangum, Oklahoma. Daughter Marsha Dement, of New Holland, South Carolina. Six grandchildren; Hayley Yates and husband Rodney. Paige Kirkland and wife Amiee, LeAnn Fergeson and husband Ray, Melissa Rabalais and husband Jason, Joshua Dement and Nancy Danford, Seven great-grandchildren: Hunter and Kamrin Kirkland, Ayden and Kylie Rabalias, Parker Fergeson, Nichole and Dan Danford and one Great-great grandchild, Cooper Lawson.
Visitation is Saturday, April 18th from 9:30 - 10:30 am with the funeral service at 11:00 am at La Prada Drive Church of Christ, 2724 La Prada Drive Mesquite, TX 75150.
